Note: A Catalogue of macroseismic observations of earthquakes in and near Israel and their effects has been revised and updated to 1994. Data on some events have been extended and reports of doubtful authenticity omitted. We hope that the present catalogue contains a complete account of major regional earthquakes. Descriptions of some earthquake effects prior to the nineteenth century might be distorted as they are largely based on secondary compilations. Some effects are expressed by the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. The list of felt earthquakes is considered complete since 1955, following the installation of the first Israel Seismograph Station. The inclusion of very weak local earthquakes, however, has been made possible only since September 1981, with the operation of the countrywide Seismograph Network of Israel.
