Context

The Apostolic Constitutions is a long didactic text purporting to have been compiled by the apostles, in particular Peter, to guide the early Church in matters of morality, worship, and governance. It was probably composed in Syrian Antioch during the late 4th century. In the list of bishops installed by the apostles, the unknown author names the first three bishops of Caesarea.

Text

Translation

(1) Concerning those bishops who have been ordained in our lifetime, we inform you that they are these: (2) At Jerusalem, James the brother of our Lord; upon his death, the second was Simeon son of Cleopas; and after him, the third was Judas son of James. (3) At Caesarea of Palestine, the first was Zacchaeus, once a publican; after him was Cornelius; and the third was Theophilus. (4) At Antioch, Euodius was installed by me, Peter; and Ignatius, by Paul. (5) At Alexandria, Annianus was the first, installed by Mark the evangelist; the second was Avilius, by Luke, another evangelist. 2

Discussion Note

The Cornelius identified as the second bishop of Caesarea may recall the centurion who appears in Acts 10:1-8, but that is not certain.
