Context

Landolph the Sage (Landolphus Sagax) was a learned historian who lived and worked in the Lombard Duchy (Principality) of Benevento during the late 10th to early 11th centuries. His detailed history, which continued the narrative of Paul the Deacon down to the present, repeats much information from earlier sources but offers its own perspective on proper rulership. In this passage on events in 640/641 C.E., Landolph records the fall of Caesarea to Muawiya I, though in other accounts the siege is said to have lasted six months, and the Senate’s replacement of the incompetent Heraclonas with Constans II.

Translation

In the first year of the rule of Heraclonas, Mauhias [i.e. Muawiya I] captured Caesarea Palestinae after laying siege to it for seven years, and he killed 7,000 Romans in it. In the same year, the Senate rejected Heraclonas along with his mother Martina and Valentinus, and Martina’s tongue and Heraclonas’ nose were cut off, and they were sentenced to exile. (The Senate) advanced to the principate Constans (II), son of Constantine (III) and grandson of Heraclius, and he ruled for 27 years.
