Julius Honorius, Map of the World 6

Context
We know nothing about the Late Antique geographer identified as Julius
Honorius, whose work survives today in several manuscripts under the title
Excerpt from his Globe, or The Continents (Excerpta eius
sphaerae vel continentia). According to the authorial coda, a student
compiled the work from the teachings of Honorius, who was ostensibly constructing a
contemporary model of the world based on the much earlier global survey or “map of the
world” (cosmographia) commissioned by Julius Caesar from four Greek
scholars during his dictatorship (ca. 44 B.C.E.). Honorius’s globe systematically
catalogs from East to West the major natural features, settlements, regional
designations, and peoples in each of four quadrants defined by the globe’s watery
limits, Oceanus. This passage lists the “towns” (oppida) of the East
from China to Arabia, including Caesarea along the Phoenician to Palestinian coast,
though some are ethnic or regional rather than civic designations.
