Context

The Synecdemus written by an otherwise unknown Hierocles during the early reign of Justinian is an important source for the political geography of the Eastern Empire during Late Antiquity. Its traces the organization of 912 cities into 64 provinces (ἐπαρχίαι). Caesarea Maritima is here listed at the head of the cities of Palestine.
