Context
Gregorius bar Hebraus was a polymath of the thirteenth century C.E.
who wrote over fourty different works in genres ranging from Christian theology to
historical chronicles and works of science and medicine. His writings are often viewed
as a culmination of the "Syriac Renaissance" of the 12-13th centuries. In 1264, Bar
Hebraeus was elected to the second highest ecclesiastica office of the Syrian Orthodox
Church, "The Maphrianate", with a see in Nineveh (medieval Mosul). During his time in
office, he wrote this work, The Candelabrum of the Sanctuary, either in
Mosul or perhaps in Maragha or Tabriz where he engaged with the Muslim intellectual
centers of the era. This particular passage is a description of the Apostle Peter's
miraculous summoning to Caesarea in Acts 10 and is part of a longer structured list of
miracles performed by Christ. A series of miraculous appearances ultimately lead Peter
to Caesarea to convert the centurion Cornelius.
