Context

This papyrus of the early 2nd century C.E. from Oxyrhynchus in Middle Egypt contains a long invocation of the goddess Isis. The first part of this text is a litany in which the author called upon the deity with her many epithets by town or region across the world; the second part is a prose hymn in which the author praised her divine virtues. In the list of cult-sites between Sinai and Syria, the author noted the worship of Isis as “Hellas” (the personification of Greece) and “the Good” at Caesarea Maritima, which he anachronistically called Strato’s Tower.
