Jerome, Commentary on Daniel 11.44-45.425-445

Context

In the years after completing his Latin translation of the Bible (Vulgata), St. Jerome devoted himself to scriptural exegesis, whether in response to his theological forebears or in original research. One of his most influential works is the commentary on Daniel, an erudite study of the nature of Hebrew prophecy and Christian eschatology. In this passage concerning the advent and war of the Antichrist, Jerome identifies the site of the beast’s encampment as the Mount of Olives, between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean coast.

Text

Translation

Our school explains the final chapter of this vision in relation to the Antichrist as follows. During his battle against the Egyptians, Libyans, and Ethiopians, when he will smash three of the ten horns, the news will come that war has arisen against him from the North and the East. He will advance with a great host to crush and to kill many people, and he will pitch his tent in Apedno near Nicopolis, which was formerly called Emmaus, where the mountains begin to rise in the province of Judaea. Finally he will make his way from there to the Mount of Olives and ascend to the area of Jerusalem. This is what the Scripture means here: “And when he has pitched his tent at the foothills of the mountainous province between two seas,”—these are, of course, that which is now called the Dead Sea on the east, and the Great Sea on whose shore are located Caesarea, Joppa, Ashkelon, and Gaza—“then he will come up to the summit of this mountain,”—that is, of the mountainous province, i.e., the apex of the Mount of Olives, which is called famous because our Lord and Savior ascended from it to the Father—“and no one will be able to assist the Antichrist, as the Lord vents his fury against him.” Our school insists that the Antichrist will perish in that place from which the Lord ascended to heaven. 2
