Context
The Suda (“Stronghold”) is an encyclopedic lexicon
written by an unknown scholar during the late 10th century. It compiles copious
information in alphabetical entries for use by the learned philologist, in particular on
grammar, history, and biography, referring to a broad range of sources from Classical
Antiquity to the Early Byzantine period. This lemma on Procopius (s.v.
describes the writings and political relationships of Procopius of Caesarea during the
6th century. Here the author depends on the universal history written by Hesychius of
Miletus roughly 400 years earlier.
Text

Ed. Adler 1935Translation
Procopius,
illustris (in status), of Caesarea in Palestine, rhetor and
sophist. He wrote a Roman History, i.e. the wars of Belisarius the
patrician, the actions carried out in Rome and Libya. He lived in the time of the
emperor Justinian, was employed as Belisarius’ secretary, and accompanied him in all the
wars and events which he recorded. He also wrote another book, the so-called
Anecdota, on the same events; both works add up to 9 books. (Note)
that the book by Procopius called
Unpublished History
contains abuse and mockery of the emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora, and
indeed of Belisarius himself as well, and his wife.
