Context
The Suda (“Stronghold”) is an encyclopedic lexicon
written by an unknown scholar during the late 10th century. It compiles copious
information in alphabetical entries for use by the learned philologist, in particular on
grammar, history, and biography, referring to a broad range of sources from Classical
Antiquity to the Early Byzantine period. This lemma on Eusebius (s.v. Εὐσέβιος) records
his voluminous writings at the Ecclesiastical Library in Caesarea during the 4th
century. Here the author depends on the universal history written by Hesychius of
Miletus roughly 400 years earlier.

Eusebius, (called)
son of Pamphilus, inclined to the Arian heresy, bishop of Caesarea
Palestinae, zealous in the Divine Scriptures, and diligent researcher
with Pamphilus the martyr at the Divine Library. He published many volumes, among which
are the following: Proof of the Gospel in 20 books; Preparation
for the Gospel in 15 books; Theophany in 5 books;
Church History in 10 books; Chronological Canons of Universal
History and their Epitome. Also Differences between the
Gospels; On the Prophet Isaiah in 10 books; Against
Porphyry (the one who was then writing in Sicily, as some think) in 30 books;
Topics in a single book; Apology for Origen in 6 books;
On the Life of Pamphilus in 3 books; other compositions concerning
martyrs; approved Commentaries on the 150 Psalms; and many other works.
He flourished most notably in the reigns of the emperors Constantine and Constantius;
and, because of his friendship with the martyr Pamphilus, he was found worthy of bearing
his name.Eusebius the son of Pamphilus: this Eusebius also wrote To
Marinus, in which he says that the Church of Christ prescribes two lives and
thus two directions: the one extraordinary and beyond everyday society, such as is the
monastic life. The other, inferior and mundane by comparison, which also presupposes
participation in marriage.
