Context

The Suda (“Stronghold”) is an encyclopedic lexicon written by an unknown scholar during the late 10th century. It compiles copious information in alphabetical entries for use by the learned philologist, in particular on grammar, history, and biography, referring to a broad range of sources from Classical Antiquity to the Early Byzantine period. This passage from the lemma on Origen (s.v. Ὠριγένης) addresses the impact of his biblical exegesis as well as his philosophical program as a teacher and scholar at Caesarea in the early 3rd century. Here the author depends chiefly on the account of Eusebius written roughly 650 year earlier.

Text

Translation

Having examined canonical scripture as a whole, he left behind such vast and innumerable writings that all subsequent teachings of the Church would take them as a starting point. And so the theologian Gregory (of Nazianzus) claims, “Origen is the whetstone of us all.” He provided a great service not only to our Church but to those outside it, heretics as well as philosophers, taught by him nearly everything, even secular philosophy, in addition to sacred learning. For he would introduce to the study of philosophy those whom he saw to be adept, imparting geometry and arithmetic and other subjects. Then he would usher them on to philosophical systems and recite their treatises, explicating and examining the details (so well) that by this time he was heralded a great philosopher even among the Greeks themselves. The witnesses to his achievements in these endeavors are the Greek philosophers themselves who flourished during his time, in whose treatises we find frequent mention of the man—sometimes dedicating the work to him, sometimes submitting their own work to his judgment as if to a teacher.
