Jerome, Letters 119.6

Context

Among the voluminous correspondence of St. Jerome is this letter, which he wrote to Minervius and Alexander, two monks in Toulouse (Roman Tolosa). They had asked him to analyze several scriptural passages and he replied with commentary on two, the first being I Corinthians 15:51. On the topic Jerome quotes from Acacius, the controversial bishop of Caesarea during the mid-4th century.

Acacius, Caesareae, quae prius Turris Stratonis vocabatur, post Eusebium Pamphili episcopus, in quarto Συμμίκτων ζητημάτων libro proponens sibi hanc eandem quaestionem latius disputavit et utrumque suscipiens, quod inter se videtur esse contrarium, post principium, quod omisimus, sic locutus est: “dicamus primum de eo, quod magis in plurimis codicibus invenitur: ecce mysterium dico vobis: omnes quidem dormiemus, non omnes autem inmutabimur. …” 1

Translation

Acacius, who after Eusebius Pamphili was bishop of Caesarea, which was formerly called Strato’s Tower, in Miscellaneous Questions 4 posed this same question to himself and debated it rather extensively. Looking unfavorably on both options, which he considered opposites, after the first part, which we have left out, he spoke as follows: “Let’s talk first about the subject found in many books: Behold I speak to you of a mystery! Indeed we shall all sleep, but we shall not all be changed. …"
