Jerome, Book of Places 109

Context
In his lexicon of place names in Hebrew Scripture, Jerome wrote that
Iafthie, named at Joshua 19:12, was in his time a coastal village called
Ioppe, Sykaminos, or Efa (Haifa?) on the road from Caesarea to Ptolemaïs (Akko). This same
information is recorded in the parallel passage at Eusebius, Dictionary of Place
Names 108, written roughly one century before Jerome’s work.
Text
Iafthie in tribu Zabulon. nunc usque Ioppe vocatur ascensus Iafo. sed et
oppidum Sycaminum nomine de Caesarea Ptolomaidem pergentibus
super mare propter montem Carmelum Efa dicitur.1
Textual Note
Ed. Klosterman 1904Translation
Iafthie in the tribe of
Zebulon. Until now it is called Ioppe, the Ascent of Iafo. It is also the town Sycaminus by
name for those traveling from Caesarea to Ptolemaïs, on the sea
beside Mount Carmel, called Efa.
