Jerome, Book of Places 79

Context
In his lexicon of place names in Hebrew Scripture, Jerome wrote that Dor
Nafeth, named at Joshua 11:12, was located near Caesarea on the road to Tyre,
which his lemma under Nafeddor repeats (137). The same information is recorded in the
parallel passage at Eusebius, Dictionary of Place Names 78, written roughly
one century before Jerome’s work.
Text
Dor Nafeth, quod Symmachus transtulit Dor maritima. haec est Dora in
nono miliario Caesareae Palaestinae pergentibus Tyrum, nunc
deserta. quae cum cecidisset in sortem tribus Manasse, eam possidere non potuit, quia
habitatores in illa pristini permansere.

Textual Note
Ed. Klosterman 1904Translation
Dor Nafeth, which Symmachus translated Dor Maritima. This is Dora at
milestone 9 for those traveling from Caesarea Palestinae to Tyre,
now deserted. When it fell to the lot of the tribe of Manasseh, it could not hold it,
because the ancient inhabitants stayed there.
