Jerome, Book of Places 23

   https://caesarea-maritima.org/testimonia/290

Context

In his book of place names in Hebrew Scripture, Jerome wrote that in his time some believed that Accaron, named at Joshua 13:3, was Strato’s Tower, the predecessor to Caesarea Maritima. This information is not included in the parallel passage at Eusebius, Dictionary of Place Names 22, which was written roughly one century before Jerome’s work.

Text

Translation

Accaron in the tribe of Dan—or, I think, in the tribe of Judah—to the left of the Caananites. This city was one of the five former satrapies of Palestine. It was indeed assigned to the tribe of Judah but nevertheless not held by it, because it could not expel the ancient inhabitants. Even up to today there is a large village of Jews called Accaron between Azotus and Iamnia to the east. Some people think that Accaron is Strato’s Tower, later called Caesarea.
