Context

Among his many works, St. Jerome wrote a catalog of renowned thinkers of the Roman world during the first years after his move from Rome to Bethlehem. In mostly brief sketches he describes the intellectual achievements, particularly writings, of 135 men, many leaders in the early Church. In his life of St. Paul, he summarizes the events of his captivity under the governor Festus at Caesarea and delivery to Rome.

Text

Translation

And because there is a full account of his conduct in the Acts of the Apostles, I will only say this: in the twenty-fifth year after our Lord’s Passion, that is, in the second of Nero [56 C.E.], at the time when when Festus succeeded Felix as governor of Judaea, (Paul) was sent to Rome in chains. Remaining there for two years in open custody, he carried on daily debates against the Jews concerning the coming of Christ. 2
