Context
Marino Sanudo the Elser of Torcello, from a wealthy and powerful Venetian
family, was a statesman and geographer who spent much of his career from the late 13th
century until his death in 1338 living and travelling abroad. He reached the Peloponnese and
Aegean islands, Cyprus and Cilicia, Constantinople, the Levant, and Egypt, but also western
and northern Europe. A learned and eloquent advocate for a new crusade, he wrote the
voluminous Secrets for Those Faithful to the Cross (Secreta fidelium
Crucis), a strategic manual full of economic, military, and geographic detail as
well as maps, and presented different versions of it to popes Clement V (in 1307) and John
XXII (in 1321). This passage describes the organization of rule over the Kingdom of
Jerusalem.
Text
Ierosolymitarum regum
servitio obligati fuerunt: comes videlicet Tripolitanus; dominus Beriti; dominus Sydonis;
praeminebant.

Let us go over the
clear glory of the Kings of Jerusalem from the point of view of the barons of the kingdom.
For the safety of the kingdom, as was typical, it was divided between princes and barons who
guarded and defended the land under the King. The more important and better part was
reserved for the King, namely, the Holy City of Jerusalem, Neapolis, Ptolemaÿs, and Tyre,
along with certain other towns and castles. This part began at the river that flows between
Byblos and Beirut and terminates in the desert beyond Darum. The liege men of the kingdom
were obligated by faith and by oath to the service of the King with a certain number of
soldiers, namely, the Count of Tripoli, the Lord of Beritus, the Lord of Sydon, the Lord of
Caypha, the Lord of Caesarea, the Prince of Galilee, who was also the Lord of Tyberias, the
Count of Iope and Ascalon, the Lord of Mount Royal and of all the land across the Jordan,
the Lord of Arsur, and the Lord of Ibelyn with various others; but these were more important
than the others.
