Context

John was a cleric in Würzburg in Bavaria during the 12th century who travelled on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land under the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In his itinerary south from Mount Carmel, he describes Caesarea as a city associated with the early Church and Herod’s building programs.

Translation

Sixteen miles from Mount Carmel southward is Caesarea Palaestina, the metropolis, the city of Cornelius the centurion, whom the blessed Peter baptized there and made a bishop. Here also is Strato’s Tower, where Herod built a harbor out of white marble against the coming of Augustus Caesar. Herod himself built the tower that dominates Jerusalem, also called the Tower of David. Josephus tells us that he built this Tower and called it Antonia. 2
