Ernoul, Chronicle 10.13
https://caesarea-maritima.org/testimonia/223
Context
This Chronicle is a pastiche of accounts of the Kingdom of
Jerusalem built around a core narrative written in Old French by one Ernoul (Ernoldus),
squire to Balian of Ibelin, that focused on events up to 1187; separate versions of the same
text with additions continued the historical narrative down to 1229 and 1231. The middle
part of the Chronicle is filled with geographical data and biblical
references that appear from their incongruity with the historal narrative to be
interpolations. The detailed chapter (10) on Nablus, however, most likely includes content
by the hand of Ernoul, who stayed over there in the retinue of Balian during his embassy
from King Guy of Jerusalem to Count Raymond III of Tripoli in 1187. Here the author notes
the situation of Nablus relative to Nazareth, Caesarea, and Jerusalem.

Textual Note
Ed. Mas Latrie 1871Translation
It is 12 miles from Nablus to Jerusalem, and 12 from Nablus to
Nazareth; and Nablus is midway between Nazareth and Jerusalem. Now from Nazareth to Caesarea on the Sea is 12 miles, and from Nablus to the River
Jordan is 5 miles. But that part of the river is not the place where Jesus Christ was
baptized, for it is much more from Nablus to the place where he was baptized, but it is
all the same river …2
