Context
Among his many works, St. Jerome wrote a catalog of renowned thinkers of
the Roman world during the first years after his move from Rome to Bethlehem. In mostly
brief sketches he describes the intellectual achievements, particularly writings, of 135
men, many leaders in the early Church. He portrays five figures from Caesarea Maritima,
including in this passage Gelasius (late 4th century).

Caesareae Palaestinae, post Euzoium episcopus, accurati limatique
sermonis, fertur quaedam scribere, sed celare.1

Gelasius, bishop
of Caesarea Palestinae after Euzoius, is said to have written certain
works in a careful and polished style, but did not publish them.2
