Context

Socrates of Constantinople, the “Scholastic,” was an otherwise unknown historian of the early 5th century. He wrote his account of the Church from 305 to 439 to continue Eusebius of Caesarea, adopting a particular perspective on the relationship between Imperial and ecclesiastical authority. In this passage, the historian documented the Council held of Antioch in October to November of 363, in which a group of bishops acknowledged consubstantiality and the Nicene Creed in opposition to the Macedonians but also as a show of unity before the new emperor Jovian, who was based in Antioch. Socrates quoted directly from the synodal accord, including this passage that listed the signatories, including Acacius the prominent and controversial bishop of Caesarea.
