This passage was written ca. 1170-1173 CE possibly in Palestine. Dietrich (Theodericus) was a German priest of the 12th century who travelled to the Holy Land under the Kingdom of Jerusalem. His account survives in only two manuscripts of the 15th century that derive from a common ancestor. In this passage Dietrich describes his itinerary south down the old Palestinian coast, providing characteristic details of the settled landscape. Ed. Huygens 1994 Österreichische Staatsbibliothek, Vienna 3529; Bell Library, University of Minnesota 1424/Co Four miles further comes Accaron or Ptolemaïs, and three miles further Old and New Cayphas. Then 16 miles further is Caesarea Palestinae, splendidly built by King Herod along with the adjoining harbor. And 14 miles further is Joppa or Jafis, with a harbor full of shipwrecks because of southerly gales. After these in order are Gaza or Gazara and the very strong fortress of Ascalona, all of which have been described already. All these cities are on the sea coast, and all are large and enclosed by walls.
