Jerome, Illustrious Men 113

   https://caesarea-maritima.org/testimonia/142

Context

Among his many works, St. Jerome wrote a catalog of renowned thinkers of the Roman world during the first years after his move from Rome to Bethlehem. In mostly brief sketches he describes the intellectual achievements, particularly writings, of 135 men, many leaders in the early Church. He portrays five figures from Caesarea Maritima, including this passage on Euzoius, who lived during the 4th century.

Text

Ad extremum sub Theodosio principe ecclesia pulsus est. Feruntur eius varii multiplicesque tractatus, quos nosse perfacile est. 1

Translation

Euzoius as a young man was educated at Caesarea at the school of Thespesius, together with bishop Gregory of Nazianzus. Later, when he was bishop of the same city, he tried with great effort to restore on parchment pages the Library of Origen and Pamphilus, which had already deteriorated. In the end, during the reign of the emperor Theodosius, he was expelled from the Church. Many varied treatises of his are in circulation, and one may very easily become acquainted with them. 2
