Note: The tenth season of field excavation provided new information on the original (Herodian) city plan of Caesarea and the use of, and modification of, the orthogonal street plan in the Roman and Byzantine periods. The stratigraphic excavation of an insula comprised of public and semipublic buildings has been undertaken over the past nine years. This season, structures within the insula were more precisely defined and the use of the insula as a functioning area of public use over eight centuries was demonstrated. By the ninth and tenth centuries much of the area of the insula had become covered by sand dunes and became the location of a Moslem and, later, a Crusader cemetery. New excavation in the north of the city contributed to our knowledge of Roman and Byzantine housing in a long-established residential area oriented along the original street plan. As part of the projected city plan, the "synagogue," excavated by Avi-Yonah, was drawn "stone for stone." We looked for a pottery kiln or glazing kiln in the midst of the "Islamic Industrial Sector" at Caesarea with some success. M. Spiro continued her study of the mosaics at Caesarea and gives part of her analysis in this report.
