It is our best continuous account of these ecclesiastical events and provides an important narrative of disputes within the Church in the fifth century, which includes substantial quotations from relevant contemporary documents, some of them unique. For the sixth century Evagrius included more secular material so that in the last two books (AD 565-92) this text makes an important contribution to our understanding of secular as well as ecclesiastical events. It is also important historiographically because Evagrius' choice and presentation of material illustrate the close interaction of secular and ecclesiastical concerns in the later Roman world, demonstrating that it is impossible to study either in isolation.
